Kandimallayapalli is a small village and a pilgrimage centre located about 50kms from Kadapa town. It is the place where Sri Potuluri Veerabrahmam, a great saint who was famous for his sermonizes and mainly for his remarks on the future of the world, stayed. Kandimallayapalli is famous for the Brahmamgari Matham (home of religious order), on whose walls, the preaching and predictions of this great saint are carved. The place does not really resemble a temple but one can feel the sacredness and divinity here. It has beautifully carved statues, that show the great skills of the craftsmen of bygone era.
Sri Potuluri Veerabrahmam was a man with extra-ordinary intelligence and a spiritual bent of mind. Considered as a God-man by many people who witnessed his divinity, Veerabrahmam generated a niche in their heart. He entered Jeeva Samadhi in the year 1693 and hence this Matham was built and named after him as Sri Potuluri Veera Brahmamgari Matham. There is a perennial well, a little away from the Matham where Sri Veerabrahmam used to stay, which contains pure drinking water. The significance of this place and the sweetness of the water is one of its kinds which drags every visitor and makes it a must-visit place in Kandimallayapalli. A small place with its own charm, Kandimallayapalli has other interesting places like Siddaiah Jeeva Samadhi, Eswaramma temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati, Poleramma temple and Veerabrahmam Reservoir also known as Telugu Ganga Project. However, the Brahmamgari Matham is the superior of all.
Sri Potuluri Veerabrahmam, from his childhood showed extraordinary intelligence and was a spiritual lad. Affectionately called as ‘Veeram Bhotlayya’, the child’s enlightened soul was witnessed by everyone around him. As he grew older, his divine miracles were felt by all and they started believing him as God. Some non-believers who were jealous of his fame tried to play tricks with him.
One such incident which made everyone realise his mysticism occurred when the villagers stopped water supply to the place where he stayed. Veerabrahmam then dug a well, overnight, using a deer horn, through which sweet water gushed out. Seeing this the villagers accepted his divinity. It makes anyone wonder how could have the well been dug with a deer’s horn. Even today, the well has sweet water which is rarely found elsewhere and one has to visit Kandimallayapalli at least to feel the holiness of this place.
In another incident, the villagers forced Veerabrahmam to pay taxes for the annual temple festival, which he could not, for some reasons. They then ordered him to attend the village gathering (Panchayat), which he did. In the gathering, the head of the village wanted fire, to light his cigar. As no one in the public could help him, Veerabrahmam started praying the Goddess of Fire to which she appeared in the form of a little girl and made the cigar lit. This left everyone taken-aback and they started considering Potuluri Veerabrahmam as the God man of great powers. From then the Goddess settled in that place and it became a well-known pilgrim centre.
